One afternoon, a friend and long-time kite flier invited me to 5 him at the Pramane Ground. “What’s the attraction?” I asked as he flew a huge kite. “Well, you can feel a bit of a 6 at first,” he replied, “a grown man standing there holding the end of a string and 7 up into the sky. When we hear the word “pyramid” there is little doubt that Egypt(埃及)and the desert come to mind. Did you know, however, that continents and oceans away — in what is today Central America and Mexico — people also built pyramids? While they look somewhat different from the ones we see in Egypt, they also were built with great skill.
The pyramids of Central America were built by the Mayan(玛雅)and Aztec(阿芝台克)peoples, as well as other smaller groups. Both Mayan and Aztec cultures built pyramids for their gods. They thought that building higher pyramids would allow them to get close to heaven. These cultures believed that the gods were found in nature. One of the most important gods was the sun. Many of the pyramids were for their sun god. At the top of the pyramids they built temples to make the gods happier. However, pyramids were not used only for their gods.
Before Europeans came to the area in the 1500s, many of the cultures of the Americas, such as the Mayan and Aztec, had vast knowledge about mathematics and astrology. They thought that the night sky could be used as a mirror to explain many aspects of life, which is the reason why they studied it carefully. The temples on top of the pyramids were also used as places for watching the skies. The Mayans had a solid understanding of the movement of stars and planets. This helped
them understand the seasons. They were the first to create a 365-day calendar.
After knowing all this about the Mayans and Aztecs, it is not difficult to believe that the biggest pyramid in the world is in Mexico, the pyramid “Cholula” in the city of Puebla. It is so big that now it looks more like a mountain than a pyramid because grass and other plants are growing all over it.

4. Where is the biggest pyramid in the world? A. In America.

If you want to contact someone today there are many different methods available to you including using a mobile, email, letter, or telephone. But before the telephone and the post office, it was difficult to send messages. How does it work? The Morse code was used. Towns and cities in America had invented the telegraph which could pass information down a wire. This was perfect for sending messages made up of a series of short dots and long dashes. The code was invented by Samuel Morse. Each letter was made up of a series of dots and dashes and both the sender and the receiver had to be very familiar with the code to be able to understand it. groups are used to show things such as End of Message or Error. So a man would begin his message in a standard way (explaining where the message was from and who it was for) and then add the message. It was extremely efficient and was soon used to pass on news of troubles or problems coming to any particular town.
Even today Morse code is used on ships. Sometimes messages are sent by lamps but more often they are sent by the radio officer in his cabin. The German army used a special code which they then sent using Morse code to keep in touch with all its soldiers, airmen and submarines during the war. If the British had not been able to translate and understand the German use of Morse code, it is likely that the Second World War would have lasted for at least two more years. So Morse code proved to be both a help to the Germans when they sent their war plans and a help to the British when they found out what those war plans were. So you might say that being able to read Morse code helped the British win World War II!

This past week visiting Egypt has been one of the most wonderful experiences in my life. Seeing the places where ancient history happened is one of the most exciting things you can do. After the pyramids, I think the most amazing place I visited was Abu Simbel. Abu Simbel is the location of two temples, which are famous around the world.
In the 1960s, this famous site was threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The dam was being constructed to provide more power and useable farmland for Egypt. It would also help to control the water in the Nile River. However, the dam would cause the water level of the lake to rise over 60 metres. As a result, thousands of people would lose their homes, and many
famous historical sites would be covered by water forever.
However, with the support of the UN and people from around the world, the Egyptian government began what seemed an impossible task — moving the two temples stone by stone from the location they had been on for the last 3,000 years. Each stone was marked with a number, carried to the new place and rebuilt in exactly the same way. Nearly 2,000 people worked on this project. Four years later, the two temples were completely rebuilt, 60 metres higher than their original location. When I saw the temples with their tall stone figures sitting peacefully by the new lake, I was impressed by the great efforts that went into saving this amazing place.
As you know, we in China have a similar problem today. With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, many of China’s most ancient historical sites will be lost and millions of cultural relics destroyed. Do you think it is necessary, or even possible, to save them all? Can you think of a plan for protecting our valuable cultural relics and historical sites? 5. C

New Zealand is one of the English-speaking countries in the world. Education is free in New Zealand. Children between the ages of 6 to 15 must go to school. Public hospitals and most medicine are also free. The largest industry in New Zealand is farming. More New Zealanders are involved in farming than in any other industries. Their products are very important to the New Zealand economy. New Zealand lamb and butter are very popular in Britain and you will find them on many British dinner tables. Just like many other people in western countries, New Zealanders enjoy their free time and play many sports including football, tennis, golf and sailing. Many people also enjoy skiing, swimming and mountain climbing. Clearly life can be very pleasant in New Zealand.
1. English 2. free education 3. free 4. Farming
A选项search(搜查)的对象应该是沙漠,如果改为to search for 才可以用在此处。 2. A
我们可以说search my memory,search my memory for his name,但不能说search for my memory。 3. C
Mr Zhang selected … to be Chairman。 4. A
解析:“be worth + doing”表示“……值得去做”。B选项缺少介词of;C选项中worth 不能用作动词;D 选项搭配不对。 12. B
解析:“be worthy of +(doing) sth”表示“值得(做)……”,worthy 不作动词用。 13. C
的,应该用the price of which;D选项whose不能指代computer。 14. B
1. Thank you very much for the present (that) you sent me.

Hello everybody!
I’m James White, a student and I have lived all my life in this city. I used to be very proud of
my hometown because of its wonderful cultural relics. However, when I showed some of my relatives around my hometown this summer, I was astonished to see that many temples and palaces had fallen into a rather poor state of repair. I think we need to take immediate action to protect them, for all cultural relics are part of our history and they tell us how people lived in the past.
Therefore, my friends and I are going to organize an activity at nine o’clock on Sunday morning in the city-centre square to draw attention to this problem. We are going to print some leaflets beforehand and take some photos to put a board in the square to tell people of the importance of protecting the cultural relics. I hope more of you can join in because I believe that through our efforts, things will change for the better.
